WHY IS AN SR-22 DIFFERENT THAN THE INSURANCE CARD I NOW CARRY?

WHY IS AN SR-22 DIFFERENT THAN THE INSURANCE CARD I NOW CARRY?

UNLIKE A NORMAL INSURANCE ID CARD, THE SR-22 IS PROOF TO THE STATE MOTOR VEHICLE DEPARTMENT THAT THE OFFENDER IS COMPLYING WITH THE COURT ORDERED FINANCIAL RESPONSIBILITY OR INSURANCE. IF A PERSON REQUIRED TO CARRY AN SR-22 LETS THE INSURANCE LAPSE FOR ANY REASON, THE INSURANCE COMPANY MUST NOTIFY THE STATE OF THIS LAPSE. THE STATE WILL THEN AUTOMATICALLY SUSPEND THE DRIVER’S LICENSE WITH NO NOTICE.

Credit Score Can Impact Car Insurance Rates

Credit Score Can Impact Car Insurance Rates

Quite often we find that people do not realize that many car insurance companies will look at credit scores to determine what your car insurance rates will be. What this means is that the Master Card bill you failed to pay and was charged off or your home going into foreclosure could very well be keeping you from getting the best car insurance premiums, Cheap car insurance quotes might be denied to you because your credit is bad. You should also know that companies in California are not allowed to use credit scores to determine rates.

There may also be errors on your credit report which can help to lower your score. If you think this may be the case then you should obtain a copy of your credit report to check if there are any errors affecting your score. If you find this to be the case, then you will need to talk to your creditors to get them corrected. By doing so, you will greatly improve your score and should get better rates on your car insurance premium.

Note: One way to keep your credit score clean in today’s economy is to be sure that you do not lose your home to foreclosure. If you are having trouble making mortgage payments due to rising adjustable rates, resets, loss of a job, or other reasons, you have the opportunity to work with a foreclosure counseling service to attempt to prevent foreclosure. Many states have set up foreclosure counseling programs and some have hotlines for this purpose.

In Arizona, the Governor recently announced a statewide hotline and the number is 1-877-448-1211

The nationwide HOPE Hotline is provided by The Homeownership Preservation Foundation and the phone number is 1-888-995-HOPE

WHAT IS AN SR-22?

AN SR-22 IS A DOCUMENT SHOWING PROOF OF FINANCIAL RESPONSIBILITY, OR PROOF OF INSURANCE. THIS DOCUMENT IS GENERALLY ORDERED BY STATE MOTOR VEHICLE DEPARTMENTS (DMV, DOL, DPS, ETC) FOR PEOPLE WHO HAVE HAD SERIOUS OR FELONY MOTOR VEHICLE CITATIONS.

THESE FILINGS ARE USUALLY MANDATED FOR DUI, FELONY DUI, AND AT-FAULT MOTOR VEHICLE ACCIDENTS WITHOUT AUTO INSURANCE.

AN SR-22 IS NOT AUTO INSURANCE, BUT SIMPLY PROOF OF AUTO INSURANCE.

Colorado SR22

Sunday, June 1st, 2008

According to the State of Colorado, an SR22 is a rider to an insurance policy. The Colorado State Department of Revenue states that in order to get your license back after having certain suspensions or revocations, or to keep from getting your license suspended you may have to file the SR22 form.

They go on to declare that the way you “file” a form SR22 in Colorado, as well as in many other states, is by going to an insurance agent and buying liability insurance and asking the agent to include the SR22 form.

Once the liability insurance and the SR22 have been bought, the form gets filed with the Colorado Motor Vehicle Division. You can bring it down yourself. Not all insurance companies have this form.

The Colorado SR22 site states that the form itself is not an insurance policy but a guarantee by the insurance company that you will keep insurance in effect for a certain period. If you don’t keep the Colorado SR22 current, the insurance company will notify the Motor Vehicle Division in Colorado. Once the Colorado Motor Vehicle Division has been notified that the Colorado SR22 is no longer in effect, but is still required, Motor Vehicle will suspend your license for that reason alone.

If you decide to change insurance companies, you need to get a new Colorado SR22 filed before the old one goes out of effect.
