Kansas City DUI Checkpoints Ineffective Says Kansas City Star.

Tuesday, July 29th, 2008

BENITA Y. WILLIAMS
The Kansas City Star

If you were driving one of the 18,747 vehicles Kansas City police stopped at drunken-driving checkpoints last year, odds are you weren’t arrested.

In fact, only 1.6 percent of those drivers were arrested for being drunk.

Police departments around the Kansas City area and the country spend thousands of dollars a year on DUI checkpoints with similar results. While police defend checkpoints as a great public relations tool against drunken driving, there are better ways to catch drunken drivers, experts say.

DWI Offenders Helped by Alcohol Detectors

Monday, July 14th, 2008

Bracelets working as DWI deterrent Alcohol detectors surpassing hopes
By Patrick Lakamp NEWS STAFF REPORTER

Authorities a year ago started putting ankle bracelets on chronic drunken drivers to tell if they have had a drink.

Now the initial results are in, and the experiment has worked better than judges and anti-DWI advocates expected.

“We’ve gotten much better results than we dreamed,” said Buffalo City Judge Patrick M. Carney, who oversees the Erie County cases.

None of the 61 offenders was arrested again for drunken driving during the program’s first year in Buffalo and Niagara Falls courtrooms. Only a handful tampered with the monitoring device or were caught consuming alcohol, according to a preliminary report.

The report found that offenders:

• Tampered with the bracelets or failed to show up in court six times.

• Failed four drug tests out of 215 given.

• Fully passed unannounced breath tests during probation home visits.

• Showed up at 95 percent of 1,007 scheduled individual treatment visits and 2,420 group counseling sessions.

• Attended 3,330 support group meetings sponsored by Alcoholics Anonymous, Narcotics Anonymous or some other group.

If you have been convicted of a DWI or DUI and get the opportunity for a fresh start, take advantage of the monitoring programs and when you are clean and sober and ready to drive again, be sure to contact Serenity Group for you SR22 Insurance Needs.

Cheap Car Insurance Not Available to Some People

Monday, July 14th, 2008

According to the Clark County, Washington Newspaper “The Columbian” Cheap Car Insurance is not available to everyone and the poor pay more for automobile insurance.

The portion about the high cost of being poor is below and the entire article may be read online at

It’s Tough to Get Far Without a Car

Poor pay more

Thomas Sanchez, a former Portland State University professor who studies transportation equality for the Brookings Institution, said that when governments are analyzing the cost of housing, they should take into account the expected transportation costs of getting to work.

“When you look at the household budget, the top two (expenses) are housing and transportation,” he said. “It’s not only the cost of getting the car, it’s all the extra costs of keeping it running.”

For lower-income people, the cost of legally maintaining a car can be far higher than those in the middle class and up.

The Columbian priced insurance and financing for identical 2002 Kia Spectras, owned by two imaginary single mothers:

  • One with good credit, a bachelor’s degree, a clean driving record, continuous insurance history and a home in Brush Prairie.
  • And one with bad credit, no high school diploma, one incident of driving without insurance, a recent insurance lapse and a home in McLoughlin Heights.

Each car costs $4,500. The first woman would pay as little as $177 a month, according to Progressive.com and Pete Cann Mitsubishi of Hazel Dell. But the second would pay $321 a month for the same vehicle.

###

Lack of affordable insurance may be keeping the ability to drive legally away from many poor drivers and helping keep them in poverty.
