Alabama is among the first states in the nation where an auto insurance company is rolling out a new technology that has privacy advocates concerned.

Progressive Insurance Co. last month began offering Alabama customers a “black box” that records information, including when a car is driven and its speed and mileage, and transmits the information back to the insurer.

For $5 a month, customers can get the optional device, which is smaller than a pack of cigarettes, plugs in under the dash and sends data to the insurance company via a cellular connection. Those who drive little or who have good defensive driving habits will get lower rates, the company says.

The Ten Worst Insurance Companies in America

The American Association of Justice has issued a report entitled “The Ten Worst Insurance Companies in America: How They Raise Premiums, Deny Claims, and Refuse Insurance to Those Who Need It Most.” The report lists Allstate as the country’s worst insurer.

To identify the worst insurance companies for consumers, researchers at the American Association for Justice (AAJ) undertook a comprehensive investigation of thousands of court documents, SEC and FBI records, state insurance department investigations and complaints, news accounts from across the country, and the testimony and depositions of former insurance agents and adjusters.

The final list includes companies across a range of different insurance fields, including homeowners and auto insurers, health insurers, life insurers, and disability insurers.

Allstate was named “The Worst Insurance Company in America” by the report which said:

“Allstate’s concerted efforts to put profits over policyholders has earned its place as the worst insurance company in America.”

Proposed Changes to Michigan Car Insurance

Uninsured Motorist Car Insurance and Underinsured Motorist Car Insurance

Never heard of it? Many Michigan drivers haven’t, in part because the coverage is optional in Michigan.

Michigan State Representative Bob Constan, D-Dearborn Heights has introduced a bill that would require all car insurance companies in Michigan to offer uninsured and underinsured motorist insurance coverage.

The bill would impose minimum limits of coverage at $100,000 per person and $200,000 per occurrence.

Uninsured and underinsured car insurance coverage is important for motorists who live in or drive through areas where they have a higher chance of being struck by drivers without any automobile insurance or without adequate auto insurance.

WHY DOES THE TYPE OF CAR I DRIVE AFFECT MY INSURANCE?

One would usually think that a car is a car when looking at liability insurance for the car. After all, liability insurance covers damages to a person and or his property caused by the insured’s auto. Right?

Yes, that is true. But certain cars and trucks have a greater chance of being in an accident than others. For example, large Four Wheel Drive pickups and SUV’s usually do more damage to another car than a sedan type vehicle.

Sports cars and muscle type cars may be surcharged on a policy because those types of cars are usually involved in more citations and, thus, more accidents.

Yet other cars are important to rate properly because of their value. Any time we lease a car or buy a car with payments, we must insurance the auto for its value. This is what is referred to as physical damage coverage. A car that will cost $50,000 to replace will cost more than a vehicle that can be replaced for $20,000.

Some high value cars are more susceptible to theft. These cars are usually insured with a high deductible.

Cheapest to insure? I’d go with normal, sedan type car or compact, which I owned, so I did not have to pay for Collision or Comprehensive Coverage.

Speeding – Good, Better and Best:

GOOD: Seattle, WA policeman had a perfect spot to watch for speeders, but wasn’t getting many. Then he discovered the problem- a 12- year-old boy was standing up the road with a hand painted sign, which read ‘RADAR TRAP AHEAD’. The officer also found the boy had an accomplice who was down the road with a sign reading ‘TIPS’ and a bucket full of money (And we used to just sell lemonade!)

BETTER: A motorist was mailed a picture of his car speeding through an automated radar post in Silverdale , WA . A $40 speeding ticket was included. Being cute, he sent the police department a picture of $40. The police responded with another mailed photo of handcuffs.

BEST: A Young woman was pulled over for speeding. A WA State Trooper walked to her car window, flipping open his ticket book, she said, ‘I bet you are going to sell me a ticket to the State Trooper’s Ball. ‘He replied, ‘ Washington State Troopers don’t have balls.’ There was a moment of silence. He then closed his book, got back in his patrol car and left
