Designated driver and shuttle service debuts in Cabarrus

Thursday, February 19th, 2009

Late Saturday night, a Kannapolis police officer inquired about a van of seven people who were on their way home from a bar. Instead of panicking, the passengers expressed relief to their driver, Ric Starnes.
“Everybody was very grateful, and said, ‘We’re glad you’re driving,’” Starnes said. “I’m glad he did pull me. It just emphasizes my mission even more.”

Starnes is the founder of On The Wagon, a designated driver and airport shuttle service in Cabarrus County. He began the service in December 2008 and has just finished the first month of steady business.

Part of the reason that he has had more customers is because of the 15 local restaurants and bars that have partnered with On The Wagon to offer their customers another way to get home after drinking alcohol.
“It offers a service, and their customers know if they have too much to drink, they have an alternative,” Starnes said.

GPS systems can help lower car insurance costs

Wednesday, February 18th, 2009

Your OnStar service can help you out of jams – locked keys in the car, roadside breakdowns, etc. – and it can help cut your auto insurance bill.

GMAC offers its customers in Florida and 33 other states with OnStar subscriptions a break on their bill of 26 percent and more when the service shows they drive less than 10,000 miles a year.

Progressive is another insurer offering discounts to drivers who willingly record their odometer readings with a GPS. And with Safeco’s Teensurance, parents can program a GPS unit to send an e-mail when the teen’s car violates certain conditions, such as driving beyond the speed limit or driving too far from home. Safeco plans to offer users a 5 to 15 percent discount on insurance.

More CA Drivers Uninsured

Tuesday, February 17th, 2009

SACRAMENTO, CA — The economic downturn may have pushed the number of uninsured drivers on the road to an all-time high. Experts said the number of those drivers had increased to an alarming rate.

According to the study conducted by the Insurance Research Council, California ranks 7th in the country on the list of the most uninsured drivers, with a whopping 18 percent of drivers hitting the roads uninsured. That breaks down to about one in five California drivers. The data was based on 2007 numbers, the most recent data available.

State Farm Insurance Agent Bob Smith said the best thing you can do to protect yourself is to make sure you have uninsured motorist coverage, which is not required in California.

More May Be Driving Uninsured

Sunday, February 15th, 2009

The Insurance Research Council predicts an increase in the number of uninsured motorists around the country over the next couple years, and with it a potential increase in the costs to accident victims.

By 2010, approximately one in six drivers across the United States could be driving uninsured after the recent economic downturn, a recent study from the council indicates. And although West Virginia mandates that drivers have at least $20,000 of insurance to protect against uninsured motorists, in some cases, even that’s not enough, said Allstate insurance agent C.E. Wilson of Barboursville.

“Some people have the state minimum, but you could have $40,000 (of costs from) the hospital, rehab and loss of wages,” Wilson said. “Medical costs — it’s astronomical.”

Rising Unemployment May Result In More Uninsured Drivers

Saturday, February 14th, 2009

To protect yourself financially against damage or injury from an uninsured (UI) or underinsured motorist (UIM), you must buy adequate amounts of UI/UIM coverage, according to the Insurance Information Institute (I.I.I.).

A new study by the Insurance Research Council (IRC) indicates that there is a strong correlation between the percentage of uninsured motorists and the unemployment rate. Based on current unemployment rate projections, the IRC forecasts that the percentage of uninsured motorists will likely rise from 13.8 percent in 2007 (latest data available) to 16.1 percent in 2010.

“Most people don’t think about the uninsured or underinsured motorist coverage portion of their auto insurance policy until they are the victim of a hit and run accident, or are involved in a crash with a driver who either does not have auto insurance or has very minimal insurance,” pointed out Jeanne M. Salvatore, senior vice president and consumer spokesperson for the I.I.I.

DUI legislation passes Senate

Friday, February 13th, 2009

JACKSON, MS – DUI offenders in Mississippi could face strengthened penalties under a bill passed Monday by the State Senate.

“This is another tool for law enforcement to crack down on those who drink and drive,” Sen. Doug Davis of Hernando said about Senate Bill 2996, which he authored.

The bill doubles the fine for anyone convicted of registering a blood-alcohol content reading of .15 percent or greater and allows for an ignition interlock device to be used for anyone convicted of a DUI offense.

Panel call’s Kansas DUI laws ‘dysfunctional’

Friday, February 13th, 2009

WICHITA, Kan. (AP) – A state board appointed to examine drunken driving laws in Kansas concludes that the whole system needs a major overhaul.

The Kansas Substance Abuse Policy Board says the state’s system for punishing drunken drivers is “so complex and so dysfunctional that it is likely impervious to quick fixes.”

The report is especially critical of the lack of an enhanced penalty for multiple offenders after their third DUI conviction.

Jennings says there is at least an appearance of an incentive for not prosecuting at the highest level.
