Have you ever looked at your auto insurance policy?
When we purchase auto insurance, most of us are looking for cheap auto insurance, or the lowest rate. Of course, we all want to get the most insurance we can for the least amount.
However, an informed buyer is a far smarter insurance client. If you think you got a better deal because you paid less than someone else, be careful. Auto insurance is coverage and protection, and that can vary widely from policy to policy.
LIABILITY-Covers you if you are sued as a result of an at-fault accident-do you have enough coverage to protect your assets?
UNINSURED MOTORIST COVERAGE-pays for medical bills, loss of earnings, even funeral cost if you are injured by a driver with no insurance.
MEDICAL PAYMENTS-this coverage takes care of medical bills, regardless of who is at fault, resulting from a collision, even if you are a pedestrian.
PHYSICAL DAMAGE-Usually referred t as Comprehensive and Collision. This coverage will respond to fix your car in the event of a collision or other peril that may happen. Vandalism and theft, flood and hitting an animal are considered other than collision. Often these two coverages have different deductibles (the amount you must pay before the coverage responds). Often a higher deductible will result in a cheaper rate.
There are other considerations in choosing a good policy. Please be sure you understand who is covered on the policy. Is anyone excluded?
All auto policies have territorial limits, so please be aware. Most policies let you drive in the U.S. and Canada, but not Mexico. If you drive there, you must purchase special insurance for Mexico.
Remember, a smart buyer is an informed buyer. Don’t be afraid to ask any questions when buying your auto insurance, even for SR-22’s
