Police Enlist New Bait Car to Fight Auto Theft
INDIANAPOLIS – You’re driving down the road in a car that isn’t yours. Suddenly, the engine dies and won’t restart now matter how much you try. The brakes grab hold. Then the doors lock with an ominous click and the horn alarm starts blaring as the car coasts to a stop.
You took the bait and stole a car. Now you’re going to jail, courtesy of a high-tech vehicle that’s the latest weapon in Indianapolis’ effort to fight car thefts.
The city is one of 14 around the country to receive a bait car donated by Northbrook, Ill.-based Allstate Insurance Co.
“We’re going to put this to work right away,” Police Chief Michael T. Spears said at a news conference Tuesday in front of the City-County Building.
