What is an SR-22?

An SR-22 is a special document provided by an insurance company that shows proof of active auto insurance. This document is usually required of people who have had major traffic violations or accidents without auto insurance. An SR-22 is different than the insurance card most people carry in their glove compartment. If a driver with an SR-22 lets his or her insurance lapse, the insurance company that issued the SR-22 filing is required to notify the state (DMV, DPS, DOL). This notification usually triggers an automatic and immediate driver’s license suspension.
